Poetry Trivia for Teens (grades 6-12)

In honor of National Poetry Month, stop by the Reference Desk and answer a poetry trivia question for a candy prize!

Afternoon Café features a variety of board games, including Monopoly, Jenga, Clue, Uno, Chess, and Checkers. Popcorn and other refreshments will be provided.

Teen Movie Time: Footloose (grades 6-12)
Tuesday, April 10 from 4:30 – 6:30 p.m.
Ren MacCormack (Kenny Wormald) is transplanted from Boston to the small southern town of Bomont where he experiences a heavy dose of culture shock. A few years prior, the community was rocked by a tragic accident that killed five teenagers and Bomont’s local councilmen responded by prohibiting loud music and dancing. Ren challenges the ban. Rated PG-13; 113 minutes.

Join Ms. Tama for John’s Island Library’s book club designed for teens. We will discuss your choice of title from Ms. Tama’s March meeting book talk. A small number of copies will be available from the Reference Desk for you to check out.

Symbolist Robert Langdon finds himself on an adventure following clues all around the Vatican joined by murdered physicist Leonardo Vetra’s daughter Vittoria. Langdon must solve the murder to unravel a plot by an ancient group, the Illuminati, to blow up the Vatican during a papal conclave. Rated PG-13, 140 minutes.

Teen Movie Time: War Horse (grades 6-12

Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, “War Horse” begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets. On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary and Mary from Smalltown, USA, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppet’s former stomping grounds. Based on the Book Movie Series:  The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (young adults/adults)
Saturday, May 26 at 2 p.m.
This unique film tells the story of the Holocaust through the eyes of eight-year-old Bruno whose father is a Nazi commander at Auschwitz. Bruno strikes up a friendship with a Jewish boy, Shmuel, through the fence surrounding the camp where everyone wears striped “pyjamas.” Their friendship will have startling and unexpected consequences for both of them.  Based on the book by John Boyne; rated PG-13, 94 minutes.

This film is the story of a small town choir out to win a national competition despite overwhelming odds. A story of faith and determination by the choir leaders and the young talent who give their all to win God’s praise and beat the competition for the grand prize. Refreshments and drinks will be provided. Rated PG-13, 118 minutes.
